Lots of new content and cool features

by Markus on December 15th, 2008

After a while “on the air” WikiPik got even better! We now have more than 1500 new items with reviews and specs. We fixed plenty of bugs and are well on our way from alpha to beta, and also added new features, for example:

  • The ranking table is now visually divided into three color coded sections to represent the three kind of data displayed: Satisfaction ratings, experienced performance and technical specifications.
  • WikiPik now markes discontinued or upcoming (not yet released) products with icons, so you know which products are no longer or not yet made.
  • The ranking table column picker now has an “all” option so you can switch on/off all columns at once.
  • “Hot Edit” feature for specs and performance ratings. While logged in, just go to any ranking table, and click on any table cell and a small dialog box will pop up to add/edit the spec/rating displayed! You can always enter new specs or change specs that you entered yourself, but you need the “editor” privilege level to change other user’s edits.
  • WikiPik can now link to your online store! For user interface is very rudimentary for now, so if you would like offers from your store listed on WikiPik, send me e-mail with the products, prices and I’ll add them. Later there will a system for you to manage your offers listed on WikiPik.
  • The search is now smarter with product codes, and will find your product even when you omit or add hyphens, or group digits or letters incorrectly.
  • WikiPik will automatically guess the correct metric/US customary unit preference for new users from their IP address.

Enjoy!

WikiPik (soft-) launched!!

by Markus on September 3rd, 2008 3 Comments

Finally, after 2 ½ years of hard work from inception to the alpha milestone, WikiPik has finally seen the light of the day!

How did it all come about?

I had the idea for WikiPik a long time ago. Whenever I was going to buy something (camera, washing machine, car etc.), I wanted nothing but the best. So I used to spend hours after hours online on review sites, wading through hundreds of reviews, looking at dozens of pages of technical specs, and annoyed by ads, tediously extracting the information I needed to make an educated buying decision. And again and again, I wished that there was a web site that had all that information distilled down for me at my fingertips, where I could make that informed decision in just an instance. After coming to the realization that there was no such web site quite as I imagined, I decided to create it, and so my dream came true (well, at least the humble beginnings of it)! So if you like WikiPik as much as I do, join in making this site even greater with great content!

Why the name “WikiPik”?

“wiki” means it’s collaborative, and “pik” stands for four things: “pick” as in “pick the best”, “peak” meaning “top” or “best”, “PIK” = “Payment In Kind” which stands for WikiPik’s reward point system (coming soon), and of course for “pic”, as we have lots of pretty pictures, too. WikiPik is also a word that is easy to pronouce in just about any language, emphasizing WikiPik’s global reach..

So what’s so cool about WikiPik?

WikiPik is the place to make lightning fast educated decisions. WikiPik is the place where consumers and professionals alike connect and exchange opinions and data on products, services, places, people, you name it. WikiPik is truly international, multilingual, ad free and open licensed, that means it’s free information forever.
